Why We’re Here

Since 1919, The Harvard University Band has been infusing mayhem, music, and wit into Harvard athletics. Rooted in tradition yet forging new paths, we embody the spirit of community, collaboration, and fun.

Our mission is to promote school spirit, support Harvard athletics, and bring music and cheer to the Harvard and the Greater Boston communities. Within the Band, we aim to maintain a fun and inclusive environment where all Band members feel welcome and comfortable.

We are not just performers. We’re trendsetters, known for pioneering the ‘scramble’ style, a distinctive mark in the Ivy League landscape (except for the paramilitary Cornell Band). And for decades, the New Yorker has called our Band “the best in the business.”

We at all home and away football games. And throughout the year you’ll see us (and hear us) in action at men’s and women’s hockey and basketball games, other Harvard sporting events, and at various university, community, and charity events throughout the Boston/Cambridge area.

With instruments in hand and a commitment to excellence and fun, the Band works hard to bring music and smiles to a wide variety of audiences, wherever we perform.

The Harvard Band is entirely student-run, from the writing of halftime shows to musical arrangements and administrative work. Our student leaders rely heavily on the creativity and wisdom of Mark Olson, Director and Band faculty advisor since 2013.
